Wow…he really got that right. And as a future teacher, I agree. Bullying can’t just be treated with a bandaid-we’ve got to get to the root of the problem ((WHY the bullying is happening, stopping the feelings and ideas that are the precursor to bullying)) and fix it from the bottom up.
I read about Jamie on the day I left for vacation. His suicide was front-page news in the city paper – unsettling to start your vacation reading about yet another teenager suiciding because he was openly gay and bullied. When I returned home a week ago, many of my co-workers were wearing rainbow bracelets, which is odd in a place like this. It turns out that I work with Jamie’s mom. We all know her, perhaps not well, but we know her well enough to say hello to her. She’s been off work for weeks. It’s hard enough to loose a child for any reason. It has been a media circus around Jamie’s death, and I can’t imagine what his poor mother is going through. R.I.P. Jamie.
