That is Blackface. No tribes people 1) are that dark and 2) use that face paint pattern. That is Amos-and-Andy style Blackface, and it is TERRIBLE!!! He should have consulted the black community before doing this.
An art collector explained it to me very well when I was bothered by Pickaninnis in the Milwaukee Art Museum, he told that art is really the one last place freedom of speech is really protected. Sometimes you have to hypathiclcally twist a few people’s nipples way to hard to drive a point home.
I certainly agree with that. I don’t feel like this caricature does anything more than marginalize the victims and draw attention away from their pain. (Since this is a caricature, I’m going to use a cartoon analogy. I don’t mean to say these women and girls are animals.) If we see a dead coyote on the side of the road, it’s real. We get it. It was in pain, and now it’s dead. If we see Wilee Coyote get hit by a Mac truck, it’s funny. He’s not in any pain. His implied pain is a joke. It’s for laughs.
I’m sure you knew all that already, but I needed to clarify my point. I did a sloppy job of it before. Though, I still think it’s racist too.
I wish Victoria Lamarr would sit on it.
