Not bad for KP or Kanye, but kind of watered-down by director Floria Sigismondi’s usual standards. She set the bar for dark and gritty dramatic music videos back in the 90s, rivaled only by Matt Mahurin (who also worked with Marilyn Manson, so compare their work on YouTube and decide who showcased that better).
Are we gonna play name-that-reference like with “Born This Way”? Let’s start with: WALL-E (the intro), Farscape, Fifth Element (KP’s alien look), Doctor Who, Starman (the plunge to Earth sequence and stock footage use), Nine Inch Nails (most if not all that intercut stock footage). And music-wise, people are saying the rhythm of Queen’s “We Will Rock You”, the tune of t.A.T.u’s “All the Things She Said” and the vocal stylings of Rihanna and Evanescence’s Amy Lee.
Oh, and Mark Romanek, gotta give him some credit too as a successfully disturbing music video maker—I keep confusing him with Matt Mahurin! He’s the one responsible for NIN’s most popular music videos, including (I’m pretty sure) the ones employing the same black-and-white stock footage used in this. To be fair, no one OWNS stock footage, but still, seems like Sigismondi could have done better.
