Here’s your weekend movie. Todd Hanye’s 1987 Cult Classic “Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story” which tells the story of Karen Carpenter’s rise to stardom and her eventual death due to anorexia mostly played by Barbie Dolls.

Things not to be missed are the stage lights made from the LITE BRITE toy during the song “We’ve Only Just Begun,” Nixon playing “Sing” on the piano and the tiny handmade EX-LAX boxes.

I’ve been a fan of the Carpenters all my life. The first songs I ever sang were Carpenters songs. I wore out all of my mom’s 8-Tracks of the Carpenters albums as a kid. I have all their albums today. The day she died is one of the most vividly shocking days of my life to this day. It just didn’t seem possible that she was gone.

I’ve heard about this movie for many years but have never seen it – it’s haunting and so incredibly sad. After a while you don’t even realize the characters are played by dolls- the story is so frightening and real that it hardly matters. I especially like the use of music throughout the movie. The relationship of the songs picked to the scenes being portrayed is quite ironic. I definitely can see why it’s maintained the cult status it’s had over the years.

I can also see why Richard Carpenter loathes the movie so much. The Carpenter family is portrayed in a horrifyingly negative light; however many sources have confirmed that it’s not all that far from the truth, especially where the parents are concerned.
