Godspeed congressman Gutierrez.
My longterm BF and I are one of those “35,000 bi-national same-sex couples”. He lives in Wisconsin, USA. I live in Ontario, Canada. Coincidentally, I’m in the final week of a month-long stay at his house. This extended visit was only possible because I’m between jobs. My new job will have very few vacation days. Our future times together will have to be frequent extended weekends, but round-trip airfare is nearly $600 or drive for 17 hours.
We could legally marry in Canada tomorrow and he could then immigrate within a few months, but he’d have to walk away from the business he created. My employable skills are highly mobile, but because the US doesn’t recognize gay marriage, I cannot immigrate to the US unless I can find an employer willing to sponsor me and then live with the threat that my work permit could be withdrawn at any time.
Until the USA recognizes gay unions nationally, my partner and I will have to be thankful for Skype and make the most of costly weekends together once per month.
