FOF #1351 – Archie’s Gay Pal Kevin Keller Gets His Own Comic

Mar 30, 2011 · 21910 views

Last year we broke the story on Kevin Keller, Archie Comics’ first gay character. Kevin’s debut on the pages of Veronica was such a success that the comic book quickly sold out and made history as the first ever Archie series to get a reprint.

Mahatma Ghandi, and unidentified woman and his alleged lover, Hermann Kallenbach. To be fair, anyone looked like a bodybuilder sitting next to Ghandi.

Now they are giving him is own comic mini-series where they will explore Kevin’s life before Riverdale and deal with heavy stories, like how Kevin struggled to come out to his parents, and bullying.

Today, we chat once again with Dan Parent, Archie Comics’ writer and artist, about the ground breaking comic book character, their future plans for him and the surprisingly muted response from conservatives.

Also joining us again are Chicago comedians Seth Dodson and Kellen Alexander. They have a new show titled “Seriously? Seriously.” at the Annoyance that runs Thursdays, April 7 – May 12.

I love that you guys have your fingers on the pulse of Archie.

  4. Angela says:

I just remembered: one of my friends wore a tux to our junior prom, without making any waves. She didn’t come with a date (none of us really did–I just pretended to date my Marine guyfriend to make the popular girls JEALOUS :D ) and wasn’t out at the time. Maybe that made a difference? Also it was Upstate NY in 1996, not down South in whatever century they’re stuck in.

Still, none of us were remotely out until graduation: “gay” and “dyke” were still insults, thrown freely. But we had each other, at least! Awww, memories.

  5. Marc Felion says:

I had a gay friend who graduated from Catholic High School in 1979 and took a drag queen to the prom, and nobody cared.
