A colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s and the organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, Bayard Rustin rarely gets a mention in the history books because he was openly gay, something for which he was attacked by rabid segregationist Strom Thurmond, and over which he ended up resigning from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. His legacy and contributions to the civil rights movement are only recently gaining more acknowledgement, as shown in the embedded clip from the film Out of the Past.
