Advocate Magazine has published their report on the gayest cities in America and, surprise! San Francisco is not number one. In fact, it didn’t even make the list. Turns out the gayest city in America […]

I visited Atlanta as a kid and I remember people saying that it had more gays per capita than any other city. Of course, that was the 80s.
I’ve chatted with Michael Lehet about Atlanta a lot. He lived there in the 90s and said it was off the hook but it waned and bars closed.
Lists like this always drive me crazy. Chicago has a city certified “Gay Village” – the only one in the nation.
Well as best as I can tell, Atlanta won because it had the highest number of gay bar’s and cruising spots per capita. So, it certainly wins the sluttiest gay city, LOL.
I am gay and live in Atlanta. I was born in Asheville, so when I read the article I was pleasantly surprised to see both cities fare so well. Let me share my thoughts: Atlanta’s ranking might be an expression of the economic strength of Atlanta and its location in the heart of the most sexually intolerant and repressed part of the country. If you grew up gay in the states of NC, SC, TN, AL, MS, WV, FL, and maybe even AR, VA, LA, or KY, you knew that you would live mostly in the closet because of the Bible Belt culture…or if you wanted to be out, you could leave your region and go to one of the big gay meccas like NYC or San Francisco and be considered a bumpkin out of your culture and far from home…or…you could gravitate to one of the regional artsy areas like Charleston or Nashville or Little Rock, or Asheville, and be gay under the radar with more gay friends…or…you could go to the big southern cities like New Orleans or Atlanta and get a good job and be able to decently date and live comfortably in the south. Keep in mind that these decisions are where to LIVE, not visit. I believe Atlanta deserves the #1 because it is the largest most concentrated area of people just like me, some still closeted, some proud activists, who grew up in the heavily populated southeast but found ourselves here and comfortable and somewhat insulated from a very large region of intolerance. Y’all come visit and you’ll see 🙂
