I’ve been hearing the ‘vote with your dollars’ argument being thrown around the Internet as a solution to Hollywood’s diversity problem, but back in 2013 UCLA did a study that (unsurprisingly) revealed that “more viewers were drawn to shows with ethnically diverse lead cast members and writers, while shows reflecting less diversity in their credits attracted smaller audiences.” So, diverse movies and shows ARE making money and getting attention, so I think the problem lies in the old out-of-date infrastructure that runs show business that might be a little tone deaf in regards to the stories people actually want to hear.
