In Germany you usually have to pay for the plastic bag. The larger the plastic bag the more you have to pay for it. Not much, for example at the supermarket you have to pay €20 Cent for a small one and €30 cent for bigger one. Therefore people usually use cloth bags. Or they use special backpacks in case they walked or went by bicycle to the supermarket. Further if you buy clothes at a good store they usually don’t put the clothes in a cloth bag. So usually one never has to buy actually a cloth bags.
I use a backpack or a cloth bag. If I buy plastic bag I use it at home for trash.
But I think we are ready for the next step, we should eliminate the concept of waste completely. If you are interested in this topic I recommend the book “Cradle to Cradle”

A short 3 min presentation of one of the authors, Michael Braungart. He is very radical in his approach but I think he is right.

Another very interesting 20 min presentation of the other author William McDonough:

Michael Braungart wrote a second book (in German) and published it in 2009 where he presents many different companies, mainly German and European which have already changed completely their production and avoid waste completely.
