The wait is over people! Scientists have figured out a way to breed (not genetically engineer) cows to produce low-fat, omega-3 rich milk. I’m thinking, “ho-hum.” The real news will be when we can get […]

I did not even know, that the singer of Right said Fred was among the bashees (is that a word?). The media got mildly (!) upset about an openly gay member of parliament that got arrested during the event. Well, at least he did not get punched like last year, when he participated during the GLBT parade in Moscow.
Always great to hear Amanda! I hope to see you in August.
Sometimes it ain’t so great here for us in the USA but it sure beats other countries where it is illegal and you can be put to death or forced to have a sex change just because you are gay.
Fat with pork is called Schmalze in german. and Grr Marc XD we english have lovely teeth, ok someone of us, a few, im sure someone does. p.s Talking about Prom I had mine 3 days ago. It was wicked, everyone got drunk, and someone said that if there was a teddybear version of me , they would buy it. Not sure if that a compliment or not :S Anyway… GREAT podcast, like always.
The partner of the transgendered mayor discussed in this episode is also transgendered.
I think the terminology is getting mixed up here. Selective breeding IS genetic engineering. Genetic modification in a laboratory is genetic engineering, as well. Unfortunately, when someone says genetic engineering, the latter is what our minds conjure up because it’s more controversial and technical. The modern tomato was genetically engineered through countless years of selective breeding to go from a small and firm berry-like fruit to the large, juicy things that they are today. Corn, cows, dogs, and countless other living things have undergone vast genetic changes at the hands of human intervention for human interests.
I think what you mean to say is that these cows are not genetically *modified* through techniques like gene splicing or recombinant DNA technology.
And if you feed enough chocolate to a cow, I’m sure the taste could end up in the milk, though it probably won’t be a brown, chocolately color or a strong flavor. When I was an agriculture major, I took a lot of dairy science classes. During dairy product judging, milk samples are tasted for off flavors such as cooked (pasteurized), oxidized (exposed to light), garlic/onion (when a cow eats something like a weed or kitchen waste), and many others. The off-flavors in milk are sometimes subtle and sometimes strong, but what a cow eats definitely can be tasted in the milk.
And as far as I’ve read, English monarchs cannot be or be married to a Catholic to be eligible for the throne. I think the English monarch is also head of the Church of England ex officio, but I’m not sure.
Thanks for the science lesson on genetics. You write well. The Monarch is indeed head of the church but I don’t think you have to be Church of England to have a title. You won’t be eligible to become the Monarch though, but l don’t think it takes much to convert: Like Henri IV said “Paris is worth a mass” or in your case, London and a service.
Another fun-filled show. Amanda was off the hook today.. running away at the mention if zits. Zits zits zits zits acne zits pimples zits. 🙂 I wonder how far she’s run now… 🙂
Lots of interesting information in this show… I like the idea of a cow that can produce fat free milk. I have to wonder if it tastes better than Skim milk– maybe more like whole milk, since the milk wouldn’t have to go through all the production to reduce the fat content. Now that’d be milk I’d buy. 🙂
Amanda was very funny today. I’ve never heard someone have such a reaction to pimple talk. 🙂
Have you ever noticed how low-fat milk tastes more watery than whole milk? That’s because whole milk is 86-87% water. About 3% is fat and the rest is the other solid parts like vitamins, minerals, and protein. When you remove fat from the milk, it’s mostly water remaining. After pasteurization and exposure to light, the milk loses a lot of vitamin content and changes flavor.
Making milk lower and lower in fat is going to taste a lot less like whole milk whether or not the fat is processed out or bred out of the milk. At this point, you might as well be buying water because the parts that make it milk are mostly gone.
Personally, I don’t like the idea of a cow producing low-fat or fat-free milk because milk is first and foremost for the calf. Even though the cow as livestock is bred and milked mainly for human reasons, the milk still has to be used to feed calves. Nature makes cows’ milk 3% fat for a reason.
How about hormoe-free, anti-biotic free, free-range milk? I hate the idea that most of the dairy products we consume have more steroids in them than the bloodstreams of baseball players.
Cliff- At least in other countries where they force you to have a sex change, they pay for the surgery. Love is an emotion best saved for family and friends, not for any country in the world. Governemnts have a way of disappointing you. Love means never having to say you’re sorry…
I can understand Amanda’s reaction to pimple popping! I dated a guy who always wanted me to pop his back pimples and I never would because it’s gross! Plus, once my mum had a huge pimple on her face and my dad popped it (even though she didnt ant him to) and she still has the scar… so I don’t want anyone popping them on me… and I don’t want to pop them on anyone else and… ewww!
Pimples suck, but so does the treatments for it. Anyone remember taking Accutane?
The cure was worse than the disease.
your story about the tranny mayor reminded me of another tranny mayor in the posh little wine country town of yountville, then home to america’s best restaurant the french laundry, this mayor was known for her wild wine fueled parties where she was fond of removing her top and flashing young men, to top it off she drove a massive hot pink suburban with kiss prints all over it, lol
