  2. The article makes it sounds like the US and others paid for Haiti to be a free nation. Haiti fought hard to be the first black nation to gain their freedom and independence from slavery. Haiti needs to be honored for at least that. Haitians have to deal with poverty, political corruption and so many natural disasters — they can’t seem to catch a break.

    • I don’t think the article means to do that

      “In 1804, when Haiti achieved its freedom from France in the world’s first successful slave revolution, the United States refused to recognize the country.”

      “France ultimately used its military power to force Haiti to pay reparations for the slaves who were freed.”
