My heart jumps into my throat whenever I hear that word. I had the same problem getting my best friend to stop yelling it at people during her road rage fits. I’d never consider my friend to be homophobic either; she’s very supportive of me. But, I would consider her homo-ignorant, which is what Mitchim’s friend must be then. I think they are ignorant of two things: 1) of course they are ignorant of the way we feel about that word. I guess it’s because the community uses “fag” all the time, and homo-ignorants assume the full “faggot” is equivalent. It’s not – not to us. 2) They don’t understand derogatory labels very well. Calling me a faggot is not ok, but at least if my friend says it to describe me (she does not – I don’t like it.), then she’s describing someone she loves with the term. If she screams it at someone she hates in traffic, she is equating a person (whom she perceives) who is detestable as…,well, ME and my community! Being gay is not a detestable offense. Those people who hates us use it in that way because they think we are detestable. So, it took me a long time to educate my friend that using a label, which almost solely describes me and mine, to describe someone or something she hates is SO HURTFUL! Her argument was always: I’m not talking about you or gay men. I’m talking about whatever is pissing me off. …..She still didn’t get it until I started yelling her name or “WOMAN!” at shit I hate like traffic, coffee stains, dog shit on my shoe. lol Then she finally saw the light. >:) For a short while I made her refer to things we love as “faggot” like sex or hot guys. lol
