Cardinal George, You’ve Got to be Kidding

Jan 5, 2012 · 6845 views

Nope.  You really are that much of a bigot.

In comparing LGBT rights activists to the KKK — and then repeatedly refusing to apologize or even distance himself from this outrageous comment — Chicago’s Cardinal George has reached a new low.

A serial opponent of legal equality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people, and safe and affirming schools for LGBT youth, George has embraced the worst of the Vatican’s medieval mindset.

Not uncoincidently, his plumbing the depths of anti-gay bigotry comes at a time when many lay Catholics and other people of faith are moving in a positive direction. For example, a majority of lay Catholics in the U.S. SUPPORT marriage equality for same-sex couples — a higher percentage than the population as a whole.

But in a desperate attempt to hold onto his flock, George is scapegoating LGBT’s — pro-equality activists — by comparing us to the worst of America’s opponents of equality.

It is ironic that George chooses the comparison to the KKK, as they are but the most extreme example of a group which has used religion to try to shield themselves from criticism of their backward views. While certainly not of the same caliber of hatefulness as the KKK, George himself also hides behind religion as a shield against those who criticize his discriminatory attitudes against women and LGBTs.

For his lack of judgment in making the irresponsible charge, and immaturity in being too proud to undo his error, it is time for Cardinal George to resign.

It is also time for those who oppose his hatefulness to stand up and be counted. Please join us in a peaceful picket of at George’s premiere cathedral to demand that he end his irresponsible leadership of the archdiocese, and resign.

  1. He’s just KKKidding.

  2. I don’t agree with Wayne. We need to stop thinking of our rights as a Public Relations battle, but more a battle for the right to protest. Protesting in the streets is always a good thing because it brings people face to face.

Backfire? The fact that millions of people still support the Catholic church despite it’s horrific record in covering up for child raping priests just shows the power blind faith can have in allowing atrocities to continue.

Not all priests are child rapists, and the Catholic church has done some pretty incredible things over the years. But the sad reality is this organization has spent millions of dollars to cover up a problem it doesn’t know how to solve.

They are immobile, blind and cold. Every scandal is buried, every action unquestioned. Every individual feeling rendered meaningless. They lack warmth, sexuality and diversity.

The Catholic church’s inability to adapt will be it’s undoing. But miracles do happen, and maybe they will change one day for the better.
