One of the biggest changes we’ve seen in the past decade of doing this podcast is the growing acceptance of Marriage Equality. In 2005 most people were against it, but today almost everyone’s on favor of it. Even states like Mississippi and Alabama are challenging their own marriage bans.
Today Matt Baume, who’s been covering the news on Same-Sex Marriage since Prop 8, joins us to take a look how the tide has turned on Marriage Equality.

They held hands!!! 😀
this is the best, fairest and most accurate summary of the marriage battle in California ever! THANK YOU! Several tidbits from my years of being on the board of EQCA:
1. The internal campaign polling showed that we were going to lose. The public polls had us winning. Matt, you’re the first person who mentions the position on polls. In hindsight the rule that private polls are not released should have been thrown out earlier. This is the first time I’ve heard someone objectively talk about this particular issue. No other campaign before or since has released internal numbers.
2. Complacency within our community was our biggest enemy, fueled by the public polls saying we were ahead and the campaign not releasing the internal polls.
3. Obama kept saying “I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman but please vote no on prop 8”. Of course the yes on 8 campaign jumped all over that. My heart sank the first time I heard that. Couldn’t he just have said vote no on 8?!
4. It’s great to hear the names of people matt is interviewing. I know them all, friends with some, and most importantly, not limited to the post courage campaign time line. Evan wolfson and Andrew Sullivan have been working on this for decades.
5. Ads. Equality California and the eqca institute (educational non political arm of eqca raised funds to research the right message. We knew rights didn’t work, we knew victimization didn’t work. We learned that the message that worked was what matt talked about, why if you couldn’t marry the one you loved. We tried to raise money to fund a statewide campaign well ahead of the election. See #2 above, we could only raise enough money to run a limited campaign. The commercials ran in salinas/monterey the summer before the election. Then the yes on 8 and no on 8 ads started playing statewide. Guess what the result was in salinas/monterey (shit, my memory fails, it could have been Santa barbara). Our side won! The point is whether is was Santa Barbara or monterey, the educational ad was effective. Imagine if we had enough money to have run those ads statewide. The campaign was called let California ring.
I can’t wait to read your book!
Amazing interview!!!
