My friend Larry La Fountain says that Latinos usually wind up playing the space alien in most sci-fi films. So why did I have a strange sense of Deja-vu when I saw the Na’Vi aliens […]

  1. Fausto, you are a fabulous, gorgeous blue alien! But I didn’t say that Latinos often play aliens in Hollywood films. Rather, I mentioned that the author Charles Ramirez Berg has discussed how films with space aliens (that show aliens as threatening, undesirable, and dangerous) come dangerously close to paralleling anti-Hispanic discourse (for example, that of Samuel Huntington), and that they can be seen as alluding to, and taking advantage of, anti-(Hispanic)-alien sentiment. Newspapers are full of articles describing Latinos as “invading aliens,” just like Hollywood. Only that in the movies, they become monsters. It’s the ultimate stereotype: Latinos (and people of color) literally disappear into non-human forms.

Now, having said all that (whew!), let me add that yes, James Cameron owes you One Million Dollars for borrowing your creative inspiration! He should send you a check, or maybe send it via PayPal!

You also sort of look like the Little Mermaid!

  2. Do I look even slightly outer-worldly surrounded by Blue Fingernails?

  3. Patricia R. Fernos says:

Fausto is a master when it comes to making people (including himself) look ‘alien’! He painted me up one time and it was so beautiful, when I had to wash it off that night, I was so sad, because I looked so wonderful! Fausto, will you please post the picture of you and me as ‘aliens’? The one when I sang “Babalou”. I don’t seem to have it on my computer any more! Thanks!
