Fausto Fernós is the host of iTunes’ #1 LGBT talk show, the Feast of Fun podcast, which he produces and hosts with his partner, Marc Felion.
Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Fausto Fernós created the Feast of Fools in 1998 as wacky artists variety show in Chicago, Illinois. Feast of Fun grew out of an audio blog to promote the live show into the world’s most downloaded talk show aimed for gay people.

You guys talking about cakes and your love of making cakes makes my gayness tingle inside. I love making cakes. I made a monkey cake and a butterfly cake for my nephew and niece this year. OK OK… after a good night’s sleep… I think you may be right. There. I admit it. You may be right about Sonseed. The one thing that I can’t let go of is the “Body Fuzion” video from Saturday Night Live. Remember that? Same basic concept (minus the Jesus factor), same execution, same results. Same irony.
But if you’re wrong… well… I think we’re in need of a wager. 🙂
OK moving on… Loved the show, Marc you’re a hoot when you’re a little sloshed, and that September 11 cake is just plain weird. I mean, at least they could have made the towers look like they did and not like burned-out replicas of their former selves. That’s just not right on so many levels. Still, I bet they are some delicious towers.

Ok, Fausto, your opening wasn’t campy, funny or in good taste. What it was was an “out of touch insult” especially to people who have served in the war against terrorism to include myself, which at this very moment am stationed in Iraq.
I don’t think anyone who personally suffered a loss on that day would find anything funny about your opening… especially since the two of you went off on a tangent about cakes… September 11th was relegated to a post thought on your show when in fact we are dealing with the consequences of terrorism everyday and it must not be seen as anything else but a ongoing occurrence of great relevance. It would have been best had you never brought up the subject or simply had a moment of silence in remembrance.
I really enjoy your show but I have to say you made me unbelievably mad at how cavalier your approach was to this tragic day. This only adds fuel to those ultra conservatives/religious zealots and their arguments about how backwards we are as gay people and while this is YOUR show, you have an unspoken responsibility to manage the perception of our community and to uphold the dignity of the fallen. I think it is best you acknowledge your misstep and acknowledge that perhaps you were wrong to make such a distasteful opening about September 11th.
I know you know it was a horrible day but there is indeed nothing comical about September 11th. Everyone who is of age will always remember what they were doing, where they were, how they felt, and as far as humor goes, it’s safe to say humor was dead that day.
As for the cake itself, I have seen effigies like this before, the don’t sell these cakes, it is merely their own way coping and paying tribute, a temporary memorial and statue; the best way they know how show their solidarity with their fellow brethren.

Hi James- Thanks for your feedback. I really do appreciate your efforts and your sacrifice for your country. It wasn’t my intent to piss you off.
However, the usage of the Republican Party and people like McCain/Palin/Bush using these terrible events to grow their political strength is deplorable. That pisses me off.
The point I was making is that it’s awkward to talk about Sept. 11 being solemn only hearing “Happy Memorial Day” during the spring.

We question how we treat this day in history. Is it a Holiday or not?
I’ve also seen The Onion (a satirical newspaper) do a parody of a housewife who didn’t know what to do after Sept. 11, so she baked a cake. I think the cake was a funny way of someone trying to make sense of the pain and suffering surrounding 9-11.

James, I respectfully disagree with you booboo..
Fausto has no obligation to do anything but be himself and to say and react to things how he wants.
If we all had “unspoken responsibility” then how would we ever have opinions? We would be too busy watching our backs not to undue our responsibilities.
you cant think that just because he has a podcast that he is held to a standard of not having an opinion on certain things because he has to be nice.
Stephen, acknowledging your disagreement, but there is no question of “if” we have unspoken responsibility but rather “how much” unspoken responsibility. This podcast as well as others do indeed have a power… a power of voice and influence and as such there is indeed a level of responsibility that is accorded to the level of power that is wielded.
By no means should one curtail their opinions but by no means will showing an appropriate level of action/behavior in regards to something in the realm and magnitude of September 11th be an impediment to expression of opinion. There are different ways to express opinion while using a common soundboard.
Fousto, Thank you for your reply and I do believe the RNC’s usage of images of September 11th was also in bad taste and while humor may be a good cure for horrible events, I do believe it’s first too soon to use humor in regards to September 11th and second, I believe the humor you used was inappropriately directed and caused the offense. Needless to say, it’s a difficult and touchy subject.
And I do believe that we both agree that just because the “other side” uses poor taste isn’t a justification for our side to do the same.

Mile- I guess because Charlie likes his b-ball. I think they charged a huge amount of money for those fancy balls, and tied it into the celebrities to give them a sense of exclusivity.

Fausto, thanks for your great response to this. And thanks for sharing that Onion article. I had never seen it before, but I found it more touching than anything — knowing the Onion, they actually found a way to deal with the tragedy in a sweet way… and actually bringing to light the way many of us were feeling at that point after the day happened.
People deal with tragedy in so many different ways. To some, it eats them up inside until they break. To others, they move on with life and keep going. And there are hundreds of other ways in between those examples.

Thanks Rick! I’ve always thought an important cornerstone of American democracy is our ability to laugh at some of the darkest moments in our collective history, in the great tradition of Charlie Chaplin.
Like that article in the Onion (which many of it’s articles had it’s own share of controversy) its important to be able to bring humor in dealing with these sad and tragic events.
Its one of the main reasons this podcast is listed under “comedy” in ITunes.
I also invite controversy because it helps bring out people’s opinions on these vital topics (how we look at the events of Sept. 11 or creating schools for GLBT youth) and gets us talking and hopefully listening.
