Author Kiri Blakeley talks with Meredith Viera about her book “Can’t Think Straight: A Memoir of Mixed-Up Love,” which details her finding out that her fiancee of ten years was gay. The news was so alarming that she had a psychotic break with reality.

Wha wha WHAT? You mean not ALL gay man prance about in feather boa’s and jockstraps?
    Shesh… get a grip Poly-Anna!

  2. Another sad story, and even sadder that it happens everywhere nowadays.

  3. Andy says:

    She obviously turned him gay

I suppose I can be satisfied with the therapist mentioning a “continuum” of sexuality rather than outright admitting bisexuals exist. :p My being bi makes my union with a straight man a mixed-orientation marriage, as defined by Wikipedia; it can work just fine, so long as both partners are monogamously inclined as well.

That’s the conversation that’s really lacking in the mainstream discussion of sex and relationships: people should be honest with themselves and their partners about their sexual orientations AND about how many sexual/romantic partners they wish to engage with. Cheating’s fine with permission, as Dan Savage puts it. Not everyone has to get married, be monogamous, have kids, a white picket fence etc to be happy, and the sooner people stop trying to fold, spindle and mutilate themselves to fit predetermined categories, the better for everyone.

Relatedly, I also wonder how many “ex-gays” who claim to function just fine in straight relationships and call themselves cured don’t know themselves well enough to identify as bi. Some relatives think my liking girls was a phase since I left college hooked up with a guy. People and their quaint little categories, I swear.

(And that was what, five days without my commenting on the site? Hope no one thought I was dead! :D)

I was scared to step in here and see the comments since the gay community has often been so hostile towards me, but I’m glad to see it’s not that. To the person who called me Poli-Anna, I am anything but. I was trying to correct a stereotype that is often flung at ME– when people ask if I didn’t “know” what they are really asking is didn’t he “act” gay? This is what I’ve had to deal with since day one. So I decided to put it straight (so to speak) on national TV. NO, there is NO stereotype of what a gay man or women, or for that matter what a straight man or woman or bi man or woman looks, acts or sounds like, and I thought it was important that people understand this. Thanks.
