Thanks guys for the comments on Gaga’s mental health services bus tour. If even you simply take the foundation’s numbers the cost comes to $183 per person served. An hour of “quality” counseling is roughly $125 in some cities. I think rather than having an “ego bus” why not give the money to local charities in order to underwrite sliding scale services. It is her foundation, but the lesson as always for us is research where you give your money or before you applaud a celebrity’s charity.
I can totally see why celebrities are tempted to simply start their own foundation instead of working with existing charities to address a need/cause.
Think about Karen Handel, the former Susan G. Komen for the Cure executive who drove the charity’s attempt to defund Planned Parenthood. Here’s the head of a women’s health organization trying to get in the way of women being able to access family planning services. RIDICULOUS!
Or the Tanqueray AIDS Ride who like Gaga’s foundation spent more on administration and the AIDS Rides than on their mission to help people with AIDS.
We hear about this all the time, so traditional charities aren’t exempt from scandal or misuse of funds. So I can totally see why Gaga in good conscience started that foundation, and I hope she in the future helps her mom manage those funds more effectively.
