Our guest today has seen it all. Sammy moved from Indianapolis to Chicago in 1972 to be in a more gay affirming community, so he could get his gay on! Sammy has lived through the desegregation of public schools, the death of disco, the AIDS crisis and the rise of the modern gay rights movement.

Surprisingly Sammy has managed to keep his sense of humor and joy for life.

    great, great show. great guy.
i wish you talked to him more about his gay life, him being a senior citizen and all.

  2. Delightful guest, but you may want to give him a few less cocktails next time. 😉

  3. what a wild ride this show was! goodness me. Sammy sounded quite inebriated throughout the show hehe. But hey, the older you get, the harder it is to hold in your liquor. It was a little hard to understand him at times, I have to applaud you two for being very patient and being in control of this rather, eccentric guest, because things could have gone south real quick if this was a show with inexperienced interviewers

  4. “Be what you are and I love you for who you are!” I think my Grandparents would have been best buddies with Sammy’s. Amazing how a generation that old can simply get it. I think it takes a lifetime to understand and feel compassion for people. Thank goodness I listened to them and kept my head held high while other people questioned me and said hateful things. I knew I was special, in a good way! Sammy was a delight to listen to and it was very interesting hearing his stories. You boys did it again!

I cried during this podcast. I wish everyone could hear this. I take so much for granted in my life. I have had it easy. The path was laid out for me and other LGBT. To quote an episode of Designing Women: “We ain’t what we should be, we ain’t what we gonna be, but at least we ain’t what we was.”

  6. Enam says:

This episode certainly was a ride! I found myself laughing, crying and at times cringing! Great guest though, I love hearing personal stories about gay history and it’s so important that these stories are never forgotten. I hope you guys get more similar guests on, maybe next time hold back a little on the liquor 😛

  7. MadDog says:

Not one of your better guests. Congrats to Fausto for trying to get him to be a bit focused.
